Days sales outstanding, or DSO, estimates the average number of days it takes a business to convert credit sales into cash.

Calculate DSO consistently for the same period and compare it with payment terms, customer mix and prior periods instead of treating one number as a universal benchmark.

Days sales outstanding formula and example

DSO = Average accounts receivable / Net credit sales x Number of days in the period. If average receivables are $120,000 and credit sales are $900,000 over 90 days, DSO is 12 days. Use like-for-like periods and credit sales rather than all revenue when the data is available.

Signal Possible meaning What to inspect
High DSO Slow collection, disputes, weak terms, or customer mix Aging, largest balances, promised dates, and invoice quality
Lower DSO Faster collection or a shift in sales timing Confirm it is not caused only by a sales drop or write-off
Stable DSO Consistent collection relative to credit sales Still inspect overdue concentration and customer risk

DSO is a metric, not a collection target for every invoice. Compare it with payment terms, industry seasonality, customer concentration, and the aging report. Improving cash flow requires action at invoice, customer, and dispute level rather than merely chasing a lower ratio.

Read DSO alongside the aging report

A growing business can show a changing DSO simply because sales timing changed. Compare like periods and use credit sales consistently. Then inspect the largest overdue accounts rather than assuming the average describes every customer. A low DSO can also reflect tighter terms or a shift toward upfront payments; it does not prove the collection team improved by itself.

Example

Average accounts receivable of $120,000 divided by $900,000 credit sales, multiplied by 90 days, gives DSO of 12 days.

What to watch for

Seasonality, one large customer, cash sales and period-end spikes can distort DSO, so pair it with aging and invoice-level collection data.
